Hi Bob. Great to see my old TA22 GT now in your capable hands. Hopefully many of the external panels and badge detail, in decent nick - renewed on our light resto early nineties. Nice too that in this case, the car is a genuine GT - correct MQ trim code and rev counter red section etc. Sadly an increasing number of faked up ST's appearing as GT's over here.
The engine should be strong apart from the timing chain rattle on start up, I mentioned to you at Billing. When the buyer bought it two months ago the plan was to trailer it on the long journey Belfast to Weston Super Mare. However a last minute change of plan and he asked if it would drive there.. I said I thought so, although it had been in store for over 4 years apart from an occasional short run. Ease it along at about 45/50mph I suggested! Not a bit of it. I picked up his collection guy Duncan, that you know at Belfast Airport 8.00am ex Bristol and he left my home with the car 9.30.
I checked he was OK, en route and the next morning. He made W S Mare before midnight that evening, around 400 road miles, plus 4 hours on the Ferry. Cruising he told me at 75/80mph, for the last 100 miles in the dark, down the M5. The old girl going much faster for longer, than I ever drove it when doing competitive Classic rallies. Good luck.

Interesting to see another GT getting restored, I have driven that car just before Denis put it in storage and was a good driving car, pulled well and no nasty whines or knocks. I see on the celica club thread the engines getting a rebuild,is it the full works, rebore, crank grind, new oil pump, valves, valve seats recut or just a precautionary look over with new gaskets, chains, rings and shells? Look forward to more pics as the rebuild progresses.Fairly standard rust on the old car, I remember welding worse rust decay on TA22's in the early 80's on cars that at that time were 7-10 years old!

Amazing work Bob - especially to watch it and see it on my old car - my skills limited to the likes of changing a spark plug. Glad the shell is stripping fairly well and you can still see some of the stuff replaced on our light resto early nineties - like correct profile rear arches for a 1974 built car. Pics of some of the panels replaced in the photo album that went with the car to the new owner. Also quite a list of invoiced parts fitted which might also help, if any original stuff can still be found - for example the original factory lower door GT decals which would always be better than repro. An original UK sales brochure also with it, to help with finishing detail for items like the correct number plates on a UK spec car.
As I have sometimes written for Peter's mag I acknowledge that, having bought it, in a straight forward transaction and I think at a fair price between buyer and seller, it is up to the new owner to do what wants with it. But as Malcolm G J tells us on this Forum, roadworthy genuine TA22 GT's now scarce and original spec ones like you are working on, even more so. And early Celica experts all know there are faked up ST's, to be GT's, about. So it seems a pity to me, the new owner wants to fit leather seats which would spoil that. Don't suppose you can change his mind - the proper seats in the car intact apart from a wee tear o/s front seat bolster. But as I acknowledge its down to him. Hopefully the engine, less the start up Timing Chain rattle I mentioned to you at Billing, should be quite good - after all, a few months ago, our pal collecting driver Duncan drove the last 100 miles on its way to its new home at 75/80mph, in the dark, down the M5 - faster and for longer than I ever did, even on competitive rallies. Hopefully he didn't "buzz" the motor. Good luck.
