Hi All.
I have a '73 KE25 Corolla Coupe SL with the 1.2 twin carb 3k-b engine.
It hasn't been started for at least 10 years but was running well the last time it ran.
I'd like any suggestions and advice on what to check and how to prepare things before I try and start the engine.
I'm new to old Japanese engines, especially ones with carbs and want to cause as little damage as possible on start up.
I don't know if there are any tricks specific to Japanese engines I should know.
Please help as I've never tried to rescue something this old before.
Thank you.
Robert.

No different from any laid up engine, i would put a few drops of oil down the bores and turn over by hand a good few times, clean up points to establish a good spark then fresh fuel and go for it.worth running fuel from a can in the engine bay rather than possibly pulling debris through from the tank. The carbs dont like long periods of time not in use and might cause problems due to old evaporated petrol ect , but worth a try.Report back on what it like once started up then depending what its doing or rather not doing then can advise further. Have you checked the butterflys and carb spindles are not seized on the carbs?

If you still have the car, 5 years on I know, and thinking of a rebuild or having no choice, then contact me if you need help as I’ve just had mine done. It’s been a horror show with parts having to come from all over the world or having to be made. I’m happy to share the experience

Hi Yotahchi.
Yes I still have mine 5 years on but after deaths in family and Covid etc. I am only just now getting ready to do some work. I am thinking of a simple engine swap etc. What did you have done as I would be interested in keeping in touch with you. My car is very original and may be one of only 3cars left in the UK with only few thousand miles on clock and body is in OK condition. Let me know or send me a private message with photos if possible.
Thank you for your kind interest.

It will be very useful in the coming weeks. I will try and keep people posted as to the progress of my car. Just out of interest Harvey, should I keep my car super original or do a engine and gearbox swap and have some fun? I have no idea of values of original 2nd gen Corollas these days. If they are just a few hundred quid then no harm done, but if it turns out they are worth a couple of thousand then I may change my mind. What do you suggest? Thank you. Robert (Leicester, UK)
