The gearbox which was a later model T50 from a TE71 Corolla got noisey as the main bearing failed. Later T50's generally have a rear shift lever mount so in a TA22 chassis you have to remove a section of the transmission tunnel for them to fit: I put an early T50 with standard TA22 shift lever location in the car. Had to make up a plate to cover the hole left by the other gearbox in the transmission tunnel: The gearbox is now nice and quiet. Unfortunately while exploring engine dynamic abilities in the rpm red zone the engine got noisey. Further invetigation revealed this: The valve and piston were not damaged or even marked so that was a relief. More expenditure. Uprated valve springs and another 90mm bore head gasket ordered. The piston heads, cylinder head, valves and spark plugs were quite sooty so I have put some 38mm chokes in the Webers to see if we can get a better air/fuel mixture when we get things running again.

Long time since last post. Purchased a W58 gearbox from a Supra and a bellhousing from behind a 3T turbo engine. Put a lite ace clutch disk into the 3T clutch as this matches the clutch pressure plate diameter and gearbox input shaft splines. Did not want to change the 3T clutch/flywheel set up as this had been balanced with the crankshaft. Shifter location from the supra box is too far back. However shifter housing can be changed to one from a Toyota Tundra (2RZ engine with W59 gearbox). Cross member from T50 box does not work but one from an auto A30 or 40 box does with minor adjustments.

Gearbox fitted. Gear stick cut down and welded (with plate) to fit driver: Console in: Replaced the T50 gearbox yoke from the propshaft with one for a W50 gearbox to match the output splines. All go: This is now a very quick car. I'm anticipating that the rear end will be the next weak link. Lite ace or hilux with 7" diff should do the job.

Scored a set of TRD headers. Which will mean further work in the engine bay. TRD headers fit straight onto the factory down pipes. The rubber water return line from the heater to the water pump is to close so replaced with a stainless steel pipe. The rubber hose and hot water outlet from the back of the head was also to close so replaced the outlet with one from a 3T turbo engine which has a built in heat shield - and cut back the hose to suit. The windscreen washer bottle will also be too close to the headers. So some work yet to do.

Windscreen washer bottle and radiator overflow tank relocated to the front of the engine bay. The GT overflow bottle bracket is perfect to hold the washer bottle. Created wiring loom and water hose extensions for the washer pump. Replaced the GT overflow tank with one from an ST car. Home made oil catch can. Mounted to the old washer bottle bracket.
