Not really a project as it was finished a long time ago. No harm in trying something different every now and then. My 71 flat light has run on period alloys all the time I have had it although it occasinally wears its factory skinny steel wheels and covers. Factory wheels and covers: Period alloys: Thought I would give some modern alloys a try. I am suprised at how well they go with the car. Impressive dish on them although I think they will probably kill the wheel bearings quite quickly:

My car reached the grand old age of 40 in December (based on Toyota production data). Still stands out in a crowd: Anyway for its birthday I set it up with an early, low km 88220 cylinder head (with some mild port work and a port match): and a pair of Mikuni 44's . Looks completely factory:

I bought a racing jacket and brackets from Pete Lee in the USA. These are copies of TRD originals but I think they are really good quality and make an excellent dress up part. You do need to drill holes in your 40 year old car. I made up some gaskets from bicycle inner tubes to protect the filler panels from rubbing damage from the bracket: Bracket attached: Jacket attached and pulled forward so you can open the bonnet: Really good snug fit. I will need to suss out a rubbing strip for the top edge of the jacket - it rubs on the bonnet front alloy trim strip clips and gets scratched when your on the move:

Drilling holes in the 40 year old girl is always a worry.....but the result looks excellent.

Thanks Harvey. The old blue car only does about 600km a year these days. 320,000km in 44 years is not a bad run. It passed its WOF (MOT equivalent) yesterday with no issues.
There are a lot of late 70's on Japanese cars in New Zealand as we started second hand imports in the early 1980's. To try to reduce the average age and km's and hence emissions from the previous largely British CKD vehicle fleet.
We dont have salt on our roads in winter so cars tend to survive longer.
A lot of vehicles have been modified as we also got container loads of engines etc at the same time. This is why I have so many 2T-G's and broken T50 gear boxes as they were very cheap.
To find a nice factory standard KE35 is quite a challange. Most are now T or A engine powered.
There are some very nice TE71, AE85, AE86 doing the rounds.

Recent WOF (MOT) came up with a fail on the exhaust hangers. 45 year old rubber had finally disintegrated. Found a source for replacements in the US. Came with some extras - 2A fuses? and potentially riviting reading. Reasonable afternoon under the car got the hangers sorted. Some hard to remove bolts - persuading them out without them snapping. Used copper grease on the replacements to stop them seizing.

Mike my 1972 hangers are the same showing age and rubber splitting, what site did you get replacements from?

Had planned on replacing the engine later this year as it had started to develop what I thought was worn bores - piston slap, lower oil pressure. Anyway the issue became terminal yesterday. The pistons were hitting the flame rings from the head gasket as it failed and they protruded into the bores. Piston 4 was damaged particularly round the exhaust port. The deck has been eroded between bores 3 and 4. The head is basically scrap as there is a hairline crack between the spark plug guide and the exhaust valve guide in all the cylinder pockets. I had a 1770cc 3T/2TGEU hybrid engine ready to go. Was to have been installed with an early 2TG head (to go with the cars age) but this was not ready. Anyway I had a busy day today. Be aware that's not a hand I carelessly left behind in the engine bay. I'm putting the sway bar back in.
