Been very quiet for the last 12 months as have been re-building the house (extension's and new roof). All done now phew. Big change in direction for the 73 car. Failed its road worthiness due to structural rust - both sills and rear quarters. Worked out cost to fix and found this for less: Its a 74 ST shell with 73 GT running gear and trim (or is that a re-shelled 73 GT). The GT had been turned into a drag racer - rear tubs, firewall moved back etc then left to rot. Anyway started to transform the car with all the various parts I have. Started with chrome, re- painted grill and refurbished emblems: Sorted out the interior (which was half brown/half black and all vinyl) with ST door cards and ST cloth seats. Never worked out why GT's persisted with vinyl seats which either freeze or burn your backside depending on the season: Put in a black dash pad and GTV dash and console: Running gear is an early 88220 2TG head (with 292 duration rally cams and adjustable cam sprockets) on a late 2TGEU block with 3T crank for just under 1800cc. Electronic ignition from a TE71. Gearbox is a 22 spline T50 from a TE71. Hence the blue lower console section as the gear lever comes out to far down the tunnel for a TA22 console. I am looking for an RA21/25 console which will work. Prop shaft is from a TA61: I'm looking forward to the coming summer when I can get out and enjoy the car. There are still some electrical, suspension and brake issues needing sorted. The engine bay also needs some work.

Moved onto the brakes this weekend. Out with the single master cylinder. Much happier with a tandem master cylinder. Thats only water round the master cylinder. Brake fluid tends to escape while pressurising the cylinder before bleeding the brake lines. Good idea to wash it off immediately. Found that the car has a rear sway bar. Mounts to the lower trailing arms like this: Not sure if the sway bar was made for a TA22. It is a good fit however.

Nick, Good to hear from you. Those carbs should just keep on going. Plans for the 73 are to hang on to it. The rust is not fatal. In the past replacement sill panels were put on over the top of the rusty originals but the insides were not rust treated. The whole lot has just rusted from the inside out and unfortunately the rust also got into the rear wheel arches and rear trailing arm mounts. Its just time really to sort it but I dont have much of that just now. One of these years. ;D Some more pics:

That bar is not the usual arrangement (mounted to body and axle as seen on later GT, AE86 etc) but probably works because it's so thick. Looks easy to adjust by sliding along the trailing arm.
I'm going to NZ in Sept so looking forward to seeing all the old Toyotas.

The joys of motoring. Blew the clutch big time. The spigot bearing broke up and the bits got into the pressure plate mechanism. No clutch meant start the car in third gear and drive home without stopping. After a day spent replacing the clutch/bearings/etc (its not much fun lying on your back on a concrete floor in winter) decided to finish off the day with my own "evolution of the -TG cylinder head" drive way sculpture.

Decided it was time to do something about the center console. The car runs a later 22 spline T50 gearbox so gear stick comes out about 10cm back from the factory position: The TA22 center console has to be cut back to accomodate the gearstick. I was not comfortable (for obvious reasons) with the console the car came with: The gearstick on P51 equiped RA series cars comes out further back than for T50 equiped TA series cars so a console from an RA21 or RA25 works. Console comparison with RA25 one at top: Interior looks heaps better now:

Yeah, the handbrake lever is on an angle now....it's pretty comfortable actually! I also turned the shifter 180 deg so it points forwards slightly

Bugger, a rock tried to join me in the car. Time to replace windscreen plus fit the "OK Monitor" system I have had sitting around. Windscreen: Headlining with OK Monitor panel: Windsreen rubber: The brains for the OK Monitor panel: Windscreen in. I dont think I would make a fortune as a screen installer given how long this took me: Windscreen rubber for GT headlining has a lip to support the lining. Can see the cars original factory silver in this shot: Headlining slotted into front screen surround: Factory rear screen rubber for formed headlinings also has a lip to support the headlining but you dont need it. Standard rubber does fine with a bit of manipulation: The brains live in the trunk: All done: Now for a test drive. ;D

Mike, amazing work and great info. When we did a resto on my UK standard spec. 22GT, reg JKC 873P ( Features section this Forum) almost 20 years ago should have gone further on the screen surround lower areas which are now "bubbling" Will perhaps contact you in the near future re: availability of the clips, screen surrounds and rubbers. All available 20 years ago but may well have changed! Yes the GT screen rubbers were different to the ST
