First upgrade on my Carina is to fit a 5 speed celica T50 gearbox. Decided on boxing day to remove both engine and box, this is in order to fit my spare and just rebuilt Celica engine and install the 5 speed. Its own engine is fine, but has a bad oil leak from the head so good opportunity to attend to this and run in my spare engine. Engine and box in and running fine by Wed evening, and decided to visit Big Al to put some miles on it then disaster struck. After 52 miles immense clattering started and down to three cylinders Turns out no 2 exhaust valve spring has broken, this was diagnosed by a roadside removal of the rocker cover ,and as a get you home measure both the pushrod and plug were removed to prevent further damage. the homeward journey was a bit noisy and slow on 3 cylinders but it made it home. Pics to follow and an attempt to replace the valve spring without removing the head will take place hopefully tomorrow

Carina now healed up! Managed to remove the broken spring without any drama,I inserted a 2 foot legnth of nylon rope down no 2 plug hole then turned over to TDC, which compressed the rope and stopped the exhaust valve from dropping in the cylinder, the collets could be easily removed and the broken spring discarded. Refitting was a bit more tricky but was achived using a piece of flat bar to compress the spring cap and a screwdriver to seat the collets. Closer examination of the spring showed a pitted area damaged by corrosion that caused the spring to break,I had a few spare springs in my biscuit tin of engine bits so no great drama.

Another broken spring but not so lucky . No3 exhaust went this time and it threw out the collets!Only one place for the valve to go is into the cylinder with disasterous results!! So head off to see if the piston has survived, I expect the head is scrap. Moral of the tale dont refit old valve springs that have even the slightest pitting on them, as they are sure to break. Pics to follow when post mortem is performed

Head now off and total disaster, this damaged occured at about 25MPH over about 300 yards. Engine now removed and putting a spare 2T-B that I removed from a scrap celica 7 years ago to try it out. Its original will go back in after the various leaking gaskets and seals are replaced

Carina running again with an old 2T-B that had 100k on it when I scrapped it 7 years ago.The Celica was never driven so when I drove the carina with this old unknown unit was amazed how quiet it was and how well it pulled. The failed engine will live again with a replacement head and piston after I find one in my shed of spares. The mobile testbed Carina has a 2T-G to prove in a few months so watch this space.

Carina Mot'd again without any headaches, replacement engine running great, only work done has ben a replacement rear section of exhaust ( good old e-bay) and a touch up around a few areas that some surface rust was showing at door bottoms and wheelarch lip. Big Al had the carina courtesy car this week for a few days when his white TA22 flatlight was getting MOT'd at my local man

Well the Carina was parked up and sorned Jan 2009, and nothing really happened to it till a few months ago.I decided it had lain idle for too long, and to attend to the rot that had set in during its rest period. Investigation showed the MOT advisory in 2008 on the sill had now become a fail . A prod about , showed up more corosion at the front sill, floorpan/jacking point area and the inner wing. The wing was removed to reavel the true extent of the rot, and in typical old car fashion the rot was slightly more extensive than first imagined ! Angle grinder and tin snips chisel and wire brush soon had all the drivers side rot removed.

Did you get your old wing beaten into a rough shape after the bump last year?

The wing is unrepairable as it has kind of folded when the car got hit, will get a more clearer picture of the damage, had been offered a wing but have had no replies from the chap.
