This car was once owned by a London Rabbi who sold it to Billy Wells in 1992 after it had been hit up the rear, Billy never got around to restoring it so I bought it in 2002 to either restore or break as Debs has the 1000 estate. On examination it was too good to break so I would put it on my to do list. I promised my daughter it would be her first classic when she is old enough drive in four years time and at the rate I restore cars for any chance of completion I better start now,(ask Debs her MR2 was last on the road jan 2003). Gemma in the 1000 Damaged rear end, panel between lights actually worse than pic shows As a responsible parent what better than to spend 4 hours teaching Gemma how to work on old cars when her mothers out , with safety being priority. 5.15 pm replacement donor rear panel ready to be trimmed for instalation Gemma on the torch! job done and the rusty spare wheel well is gone too! 8.00pm replacement panel tack welded in place at the top Panel fit very good ready to final weld in place 8.45pm time to head indoors Gemma seems pleased with the nights progress

So this is what you two get up to when I pop out for a couple of hours. See what I mean when will my car see the light of day Harvey? I cant turn my back for a second and you have Gems slaving away in the garage. Slave labour and child cruelty comes to mind. Debs

hey there KP30girl, keep up the good work and let us know your progress. If your dad doesnt do the repairs & maintenance you & your mum want and quick enough, just stop feeding him, or if all else fails, hide his 15 sets of other car keys, or lock him out of the car shed.

Tonight we tackled removing the rusty and bent rear valance, modifying and fitting the cortina valance. As you can see in the pictures the new panel was a bit bigger As dad chopped up the valance ( to a width of 45 inches ) I took out the spark-plugs in mum's 1000 estate Dad cleaned them up and I fitted them back in as the car was running very rough before. I started it and the car is running fine now. The rear valance is now fitting well and is tack-welded in place waiting for dad to do the final welding of the panels.

kp30girl, why do you live so far away?
As my (proper) 1000 estate also needs your attention.
I hope your dad's not paying you in chocolate buttons. No, hold on, I hope he IS paying you in chocolate buttons. ;D

Friday nights are 1000 resto nights, last night the damaged and rusted out lower nearside rear quarter panel was repaired and heres how we tackled repairing the damage. Strap of sheet steel clamped prior to welding on to rear arch section is to be used an attachment point for slide hammer, as the arch was pushed back in a previous minor accident, and the quarter panel was creased, returning to the original profile could have been tricky. This photo does not show full extent of the damage but if you look at the opening pics in this thread they show the extent of the panel damage. The arch section was pulled forward about 10mm then the strap ground off. The rot was cut out of the lower pocket outside and inside. Gemma made a cardboard template of the missing vertical section and transfered this to 1mm sheet steel which was cut using the guillotine and welded into place. The outer lowersection having double curves was fabricated out of the end pieces of a mini rear valance. There were only a few nips and tucks to get an acceptable profile of the mini panel before clamping and final welding into place. The arch section needs a small area replaced so next post should cover the fabrication of the repair section as no repair panels exist for this vehicle. Final pic shows the almosted completed repair section Safety glasses ang gloves were used during all grinding operations during this repair.

I know she will be driving it one day ......... but for now she likes to get her hands dirty on her own wee car. She is enjoying every minute of it, she has a few years yet before she will be on the road legally. Then I will be hiding my keys ;D ....... but for now I wont worry about that.
