What a great car and nicely rebuilt too. It's great to see so much love put into a humble wee car. Roll-on the driving test pass! Ferg

Harvey did the points last the trip back home ? To continue the story as Bob enquired above, we left Billing with fresh points and had another stoppage before the M1 exact same symptoms but now happening about 50 MPH, I had only changed the points so decided to change the condensor, no improvement and i had again regapped the points by eye, we limped to Northampton services and had no option but to call the RAC as by now I was thinking it must be a fueling problem, enough delivery to sustain idle but not enough delivery to maintain any speed. Rac arrived and i explained what was happening and the patrol guy thought it could be fuel too, the pump delivery at cranking was not great, and the patrolman could not confirm what it should be as he said "its been about 20 years since I have been troubleshooting mechanical fuel pumps" Another assault on the M1 with the RAC in persuit saw us attempt the 10 mile run north to Watford Gap services where again after about 3 miles to ground to a halt, this time no spark, dizzy cap removed and when manually opening points a great spark, crank it over spark is back! We limped to watford Gap for further investigation where it became apparent one of the points retaining screws was stripped, when nipped down ( points screws dont require more than a good nip) all seemed well and there is a gap but at constant running the points close up, when troubleshooting and manually opening them the base is moving enough to create a gap and give a spark. It appears the three times the points were removed during the journey every subsequent nip of the screw removed another portion of thread thus reducing grip and hence the points would close down after less miles after each disturbance. The RAC guy had a M4 screw all be it about 25mm long cut it to about 4mm and managed to secure the points, where we managed to continue the journey, by now this was some 3 1/2 hrs after leaving Billing and only travelled less than 30 miles. We got home ok but there was still a very slight miss under light throttle but it was going! Hindsight a great thing they say, next year if its a completed project I will try and get more than 16 miles of testing below its belt, however It did run fine till 40 miles north of Birmingham on the way down strangely enough!!

Sounds like an electronic dizzy from a later model could help with reliability .

Car seems fine now but the late KE70 dizzy upgrade would be the way to go with electronic ignition. Still a few jobs to complete on the car, before its next show at Selkirk. Thanks to all the people who commented on the car at the show and on here it makes it all worthwhile, so another project for next year? Only after I take a few weeks off to catch up on a few jobs around the house and garden ;D Just realised no pics on here of the finished article Completed pics taken by Fergus (hope you dont mind me using them) and a reminder of how it looked in 2002!

Yes Fergus the period plates were on the to do list, particularly the rear as the std uk square as fitted to the rear is too tall, will be ordering a set with the raised digits as would be fitted when new. We also have a set of period toyota mudflaps for the back which should finish it off quite nicely.
