Hi I've been offered a AE86 Gearbox. Can this be made to fit to a ta22? If so , what's involved? Thanks

Not straightforward, output shaft splines are different so Celica prop wont fit, bellhousing wont fit unless its a late TA40, TA60 or TE71 bellhousing is used, as input bearing dia is larger on the late T50 boxes post 1981, think early bearings are 62mm dia as opposed to 68mm and gearstick might be further back on the late box.

As per harvey's post. Later T50 has 22 spline output (20 spline for T50 in TA22) To fit in a TA22 you will need propshaft and bellhousing from a TA45 or TA61 (both came with 2TGEU and 22 spline T50). All bolt on stuff with no mods. The standard 22 spline T50 has the gear stick at the rear of the selector housing so comes out of the transmission tunnel 10cm further back than the 20 spline T50. You can transfer over the 20 spline T50 selectors with gear stick mount at the front of the selector housing if you want. If you use the 22 spline box as is you need to extend the hole in the transmission tunnel and the gear stick comes out here: Your TA22 centre console is now no use as it will prevent 2nd, 4th and reverse being selected without hacking a section out of it. Its either custom console time or a console from an RA20/21/25 like this: With the right parts it can be done and look right too.

Thanks for the info- it sounds tricky. Is it possible to use the celica T50 Bellhousing and output housing to keep the interfaces correct, or are they totally different?? Cheers

Clouder,
You can swap over the gear shift housing reasonably easily but you will have to split the box and swap the gear selector shafts over too. You still have a 22 spline output though.
The TA22 T50 bellhousing will reqire a lot of machine work particularly for the main bearing retainer.
I only did the swap because I had all the parts for a bolt in job. Cutting and shutting the hole in the transmission tunnel took 10 mins and cost nothing.
If you like a challange though. ;D
