i went down to my lock up where i keep the ra40 today just to give it a bit of a run . it was taking a while to start and feeling that i'd probably flooded it i left it for 5 mins . when i went back to it and turned the key there was a BANG ! like a bomb going off and a pile of rust where the rear silencer had been the rear box just exploded ! am i likely to have caused any other damage elsewhere ? i used to have an ra28 with an 18rg in it that was occasionally out of tune but starting it was never that dangerous ! what could have been the cause ?

Hi
Your back box is likely to be where the fuel / fumes ended up while turning the engine over. I've seen it before ( had it been standing long / clasped-rusted internals in box ) and generally all it needs is a new back box and a bit of a service on the engine. Did you get it running afterwards ?

I have several New Old Stock boxes if you want to try and put a box from a different model on there OR go for a bespoke S/S affair.

I have seen many new cars with this problem due to the modern coil packs becoming faulty. The last one was a Vauxhall Zafira, coil pack went down on two cylinders and unburnt fuel went into the silencer. Then an almighty bang as the silencer blew up! Of course it also can really damage the catalyst too..... Hope you get an exhaust
