Hi can someone please tell me what's involved in removing the sump on this to reseal it? A local garage said 7 hrs to remove it!!! The dealer said maybe 4.5 just to remove it. B....y expensive to seal a leak?

I can't be 100% on what's involved on the ST202 but I've done an SW20 MR2 sump which uses the same 3S-GE engine. This was reasonably straightforward and a bit of internet research shows the Celica shouldn't be too difficult. I imagine all the underbody shields will have to come off and possibly the exhaust downpipes. It's also possible the gearbox cross member will need to come off. I believe TEC member Malcolm Graham-Jones may have recently have done the sump on his daughter's ST202 so I can contact him if you need further advice. Here's a link to a diagram of the ST202 sump which as you can see is a 2-piece affair, upper sump being aluminium and the lower sump steel. Maybe the smaller sump will come off without the above dismantling. i138.photobucket.com/albums/q256/ifc63/downloads/diag_1iALSpX.png

thanks for this but really I would like to hear from someone who has done an ST202 to guage if these times are realistic. If so I'm not paying a garage and I need to allow enough time to do it!

Chris you could always ask on CCUK as I'm sure someone on there must have done one.

Hi Chris
I have just changed the sump on my daughters car as it had been hit by a stone and had rusted through on the front. the job is relatively easy you don't need to to disturb exhaust or anything like this. jack up car , i had it on ramps , remove under covers which are either screwed in or plastic crews. undo all the bolts all the way round with a socket , put in a cardboard jig so they go back where they came from. after draining oil remove sump after disconnecting low oil level sensor on the side . sump is held with gasket cement from new , no cork gasket. disconnect oil senior from old sump put into new one put new layer of gasket cement around new sump and bolt back up, reconnect senior and fill with oil check for leaks.
the only proble i had was getting a replacement sump. one of the guys sent me from ccuk but it had no senior hole so must have come from an import engine. found one in my local breakers for £10 which was fine. job took 3 hours from start to finish. if you need to discuss please give me a call 07778 343116.
cheers malcolm.
