Hi, just having a moan because my wife is sick of listening to me but - just in the middle of swapping my old 2TB engine for a nice recon 2TB unit and nothing fits off my old engine! how can they be so different "its the same engine" The alternator bracket, the rocker cover, all the bolt sizes are different even the dipstick won't fit! and an other thing! though I would change the old fixed fan for a fiscus fan sounds easy, ho no! different water pump & all fittings. Any one know why their are differences to my 2TB'S feel better now cheers.

Is there more to the engine number which would indicate a certain type of 2TB?

Toyota redesigned a few features during the T series production run. You appear to have a end of run prob 1982 onwards engine which had the different rocker cover, larger dipstick tube, larger crankshaft pulley.
The early engines had lower compression on the 2T Carina, but retained the same compression ratio on the 2T-B Celica engines at 9.4 to1 throughout its life.
If mixing and matching early/late blocks and heads, you can end up with a high compression combination .
Celica higher compression heads can be identified with letter B stamped on the inlet manifold machined face of the head normally between no1 &2 ports

Harvey you are the king of Toyota's ;D the recon unit does has a B on the manifold just like you said. so does that mean I have a better engine than the old one? It has BK stamped on it if that means anything? will it fit ok to my gearbox? also fitting a new clutch " does it matter which way the plate goes in" so many questions, Cheers, more probs manifold dont fit statrer motor to big support brackets to gearbox dont fit sorry i started now
