I know from comments on this Forum and also chatting at Billing some of us reckoned TGB were not doing much to celebrate their 50th Birthday. You might be interested to read this weeks Autocar magazine, cover date 29 July and their Editor in Chief, Steve Cropley's weekly diary column - a more mature gent than some of the younger journalists. He reports on a recent coffee morning with TGB driving some earlier cars - including an AE86, third gen MR2 and very early Prius. Very complimentary he was too. I know TGB themselves, have an AE86 and RT40 Corona but not sure if they have acquired more Classic Toyota or borrowed them . But good they show interest.
I know Billy Wells and Peter Hunter keep in touch with TGB and that is also important - hopefully they see us as the original Club. I believe too, Billy was at the Toyota function mentioned, in as I understand it, Cheltenham and the loan of the sporty Lexus to him, centre piece at Billing, a thank you..

I've been gently reminding the Toyota UK Facebook page as to what was done on previous anniversary celebrations. So far I've posted a scan of the Winter 1985 Toyota Today article which had a photo and description of the Corolla 20, a run of 500 cars with limited edition paint and extras. Also I've sent them a full scan of the 1995 24-page full colour What Car supplement produced for Toyota GB to celebrate 30 years in the UK. And finally for now I sent a photo of the limited edition (500) Crown Derby plate marking the same occasion. Does anyone else remember what was done, possibly for the 10th anniversary in 1975 or the 40th in 2005.

Well done Ian, perhaps they have some ideas and are going to announce nearer the end of the year to coincide with the anniversary, lets hope so.

Yes Ian, thanks for the archive material. While it seems at the moment TGB aren't doing much so far, to advertise or promote their 50 years to the public at least good to see they are reminding the Motoring press. So from the two publications mentioned on this thread, seems their Heritage fleet includes an RT40, AE86, early RAV 4 and early UK built Carina E - probably also an early Prius - quite a representative selection.
The RT40 was donated to TGB by Rory Broad long time boss of Toyota dealer West End Engineering in Preston. Seems too, Billy Wells was at the Cheltenham function mentioned in the Daily Telegraph but no mention yet of his Crowns. Look out, as I imagine there may be more features appearing in other publications. We can wait and see if TGB do anything publicly. Certainly they celebrated their 25th with a very high powered function at the Grosvenor House in London for all their dealers and various other dignitaries - headed by the Guests of Honour, Toyota President, Doctor Shoichiro Toyota and Princess Anne. Extensively covered in the September 1990 Toyota Today.

The 50th anniversary seems to be slowly making it into the more mainstream press. TEC member Phil Williamson spotted this article in the Sun newspaper.
