First let me explain that I am NOT a mechanic !!. We have a 1975 Toyota 1000 with 34,000 miles on the clock and many months ago the diaphragm failed in the fuel pump. I found an after market one, and fitted it together with a new fuel filter. Now the problem, the pump will not draw fuel from the tank, it will draw fuel from a container close to the pump and run the engine for a short time, like wise putting fuel in the carb. Question is what am I doing wrong, any advice or comment will be greatly appreciated, if any mobile mechanic is passing Warrington and would like to have a look he/she would be made very welcome Regards Colin

Hi, first thought is rust in the end of the pipe in the tank, (tanks get a build-up of flaky over the years ) if you have an air line blow back down the pipe from the engine end. Next thought…and rubber pipework along that fuel pipe may of collapsed . Last idea…it’s a weak pump and can pull fuel from a container but not from the tank.
