Hey Big Al! nice one on the site. Have you got any info on the corrolla TE51? I've got two, a 1979 red/orange daily driver and a 1976 green mostly dismantled spares wreck. I really want info about them! jon

1979?
The TE51 is that the unique low lift back yes?
Because in '79 they had the KE70/TE70 range in full swing then didn't they? (the KE70 of which spares are still easy to obtain for)

Yeah, it's on a V reg, first registered november '79. I'm pretty sure the TE71 had superceded it by then, as whenever i go into the local motor factors to get stuff for it they don't have records for a '79 TE51, so i always say it's a 1978 model! I'd put a photo up if i knew how to do it!

Jon, you will find that the '50' range (TE51) and '70' range (KE70/TE71) ran for nearly 2 years side by side. The TE51 ceased around end of 79 but the KE70/TE70 range came out around early 1978.
The '50' range was a more unique version of the Corolla (more popular in the states) of which there was the liftback (which we had in UK) and (in USA and Home market) a liftback/fastback 2 door coupe.
both model codes of Corolla some mechanical parts are the same.

What i can remember is this model came in 1200cc or 1600cc. The 1200cc could take any engine from the Toyota 1,000 to the starlet 1300cc. The 1600cc engine was the same in the later 70s series Corollas. A very fine engine for this car would be the one out a 85 Corolla G.T. R.W.D. Coupe. The 0 to 60 would be around 8 seconds and 120 M.P.H. A bit more with some extras and a wee tune. You would need to get expert advice from someone like Harvey Wade.

I've seen photos of the coupe/fastback and it's beautiful, if only they were sold over here! I didn't realise they came as a 1200cc, both of mine have the 1600cc 2T engine and T40 4-speed box. I've been dreaming of putting a later engine in, but i haven't got the cash to spend on doing it, getting better brakes etc, and paying for the insurance which will be sky high! Is the '85 GT engine a 4AGE? I always think the liftback looks a bit wierd (see the photo above!), from the back and side it's really low and wide, but from the front it's tall and narrow.... very strange....
