Hi Brae, can you give me any hints on engine removal? i've not done one myself yet, but want to get the 2T out of my spare TE51 (see other thread). I've disconnected everything and the only bolts left to undo are the gearbox/drive shaft (i'm going to try and get the engine and gearbox out together) and the two engine mounts. I can borrow a free standing engine crane off a mate. How many people would it need to do the job safely? Are there any things i really need to know before i have a crack at it? cheers jon

Hi Jon, this is the first engine i have ever removed. I did this myself and it seemed quite simple. I think removing the gearbox first made it a bit easier (although it does take a little bit more time removing the gearbox first). I'm not sure what is the best way about removing the 2T engine and gearbox is, better asking an expert like Harvey who has probably removed and replaced 100's of 2T and 2TG engine or his wife Debs (Toyodee) who has probably helped in many cases.

Thanks Bryan Yes I have been there on many an engine change, I have lots count on just how many ;D But only to my own cars not the celica's I left them to Harvey, but I think they are all the same apart from the bigger engines with more pipes, cams, some are easier than others.

So it should be pretty easy then? Because i'm dismantling it for spares i've already taken a lot of bits off (in and out manifolds, carb, alternater etc), it's amazing how much space i've got to play with in the engine bay! I suppose it's just a case of getting the balance right with the crane and then hoisting away, yeah? jon

Hi guys I've done both 2T and 18R engines on TA23 and RA28 with and without gearbox. If you install the engine on its own then lining up the clutch to gearbox is the trickiest part, but not that difficult. If you do the whole thing together then you need to have the engine on the hoist in such a way that it can be lowered down in at an angle and then levelled off as the gearbox enters the tunnel. Removing the gbox Xmember is a 2 minute job and makes it a lot easier. It's much easier with two people, but more than two is no advantage really. I've done these jobs with either pulley blocks or even a JCB! I've never had the luxury of a engine crane. The whole thing is really about common sense and showing the engine who's boss. There's nothing too technically demanding. Just be careful with general safety and nipped fingers. Good luck. AL

Since I put my engine removal on this thread I've decided I'll put the installation on it aswell. Nice new looking 18RG with P51 Gearbox just wait to be installed: So in it went:

Thanks for the comments guys ,very much appreciated. Hi Brae where did you get a mint engine and box without going to the other side of the world. I bought the engine off of an ex TEC member called Steve Mann (very knowledgeable been involved in lots of celica restos) The engine had been lying in his garage for several years, but said that it was one of the sweetest engines he had ever heard running. (including his 16,000 mile ra28 gt). The engine did not arrive in this condition, though a gallon of degreaser, wire brushes, a large pack of scotchbrite and lots of elbow grease later and this is the result. The funny thing is while I had Commited to buying Steve's engine Alan Duncan (Big Al) had discovered a lock up in Fife full of Celica RA28 parts, many of which were GT parts including 1 full engine and 1 dismantled engine, 3 gearboxes and 2 LSD s not to mention a whole list of other parts. So after doing a deal with the owner, Big Al, Harvey and myself headed up to Fife to collect the parts in a long wheel base transit which almost wasn't big enough to carry everything. I think I owe Big Al and Harvey several Pints for helping with this one.

Well the old 28 fired up today after finally getting the correct dizzy cap and rotor arm. She spat, hist, burped, popped and banged (made a few adjustments here and there) then she roared into life. Unfortunatly the ST Exhaust doesn,t fit the GT manifold so the only thing I could use was a tubular manifold that stops just about the gearbox crossmember, Sounds great but is very loud(popular with the neighbours ).Then after letting the engine get to temperature, turned her off only to hear a dripping noise coming from underneath (pin hole in the sump),must have holed due to the temperature You know what they say "One step foward two steps back". Oh well it could have been worse.

cant beat the sound of an old skool toyota twincam! ;D ;D When do you expect to hear it on song on the public highway? Not to sure when it will be running again.Had to order a new sump gasket should arrive Tuesday.Removing the sump from an 18 rg is not as easy as i thought it would be, but it's off now. Would love to have the car ready for summer(what year?)but it won't be.I think the best I could do would be Eglington in August and thats at a push. Really need to thank Nick (Sidta23) again for the parts CD rom ,would advise anyone with a 23 or 28 to get in touch with him to buy a copy,it makes life a lot easier when ordering parts from Toyota. Worth it's weight in gold.
