I forget to ask the knowledgeable ones this weekend at Billing, but what fuel should I be putting in the Sunchaser? It's a standard 2T-B engine but does tend to get used on the harder side. I've done 2000 miles on unleaded but read something the other day which made me question its use. For the Billing trip I put Super unleaded in as it was all high speed motorway work. Am I risking any damage to the valves/seats? More specifically for Harvey, as you knew the car when Richard had it, when he had the engine overhauled, do you know if he did any extra work in this area? It's easier to ask you than try and get a response from him now he's in the Dominican full-time. Thanks in advance, Ian.

Ian Good to hear the car run great back home for you (its a toyota after all). As far as I can remember from talking to Richard 1995 at NEC and Billing the head was just standard or at most a light polish of the ports. Its ok to run unleaded with the T series engines,You are supposed to retard timing by 2 degrees (if my memory serves me correctly) but I have never bothered and have suffered no adverse effects whatsoever, and im not light footed either.
Hope this helps Harvey

Harvey, Thanks for the quick reply, that was the answer I was hoping for! It's just when someone puts a little doubt in my mind, it tends to bother me. Ian.

I use unleaded in my standard 2T, but put in castrol valvemaster plus octane boost as well. I've never had any problems running up to 4 tanks without it though if i've run out. jon

Thanks Jon, I might try a bit of Valvemaster just for extra peace of mind on longer, harder runs. On a different note, I was discussing the TE51 Liftbacks with some Club Members this weekend at Billing and said how much one would fill the slot as a useable everday practical car for me. Things like bomb-proof engine, decent load area and in my opinion really nice looks....BUT I haven't heard of one for sale anywhere. Was yours a chance buy or did you have to track it down, and how many were sold in the UK because thinking back I don't really remember seeing that many when I was a bit younger. Regards, Ian.

Hey Ian! i'm afraid it was a total ramdom buy! I was looking for something old, unusual, and with chrome bumpers for £1000. Scanning through classic cars for sale i spotted the TE51 and a Hillman Imp and when to look at the Corolla first..... I had no idea about the model or even classic toyotas at all, paid £600 for it with no MOT (it had been standing for a couple of months) and drove it from Glouster to Nuneaton with no problems. Took it for an MOT and it passed, i was amazed!!! I've only ever seen two in the flesh, my orange one and my spare. This one's a total basket case that i'm slowly dismantling in my parents drive, and i was given the complete car for free after putting a spares wanted ad in practical classics. Both were advertised in TEC topics prior to me getting them, i even phoned up and offered £250 for the green one that was to become my spares car but the guy had already had an offer of £300 from the guy who gave it to me! I think he was going to restoreit but then realised that panels are impossible to get hold of! No idea how many were about "back in the day" but my mechanic remembers working on one in the early eighties and they were pretty rare. Good luck finding one, and if you come across any parts please let me know! If you're in the midlands feel free to come and visit and have a look. cheers jon
