i just discovered the head on my 1979 12r hiace camper engine is cracked. i've only had it for a couple of weeks and i'm desperate to get it back up and running.. i'm looking for another head to replace it ( see spare parts) , but i'm just wondering about possible engine swaps that would mate up to the standard 4 speed gearbox thats in the camper, incase i can't get a head for it.. i have found a few usefull sites but nothing concrete about which engines mate up to which gearboxes . i know the 18r engines were fitted to longer wheel base and later hiaces but is the gearbox/ bell housing the same as for the 12r gearbox?? also do any later more modern toyota engines mate up to the older gearboxes easilly or do you need to make bell housing adaptors/plates and such like to get them to fit??? i am considering all options at the moment including diesel so any information or ideas anyone has on the subject would help me enormously, and be much appreciated.. i run my own business in central scotland welding, restoring cars and general mechanics. i work on anything but my favorite cars always tend to be 70's japanese, i have 4 70's datsuns, 1 73 mazda, and the camper is my first toyota. always loved early celica's and supra's but the camper was the only justification i could give myself for owning yet another car... cheers fraser

I don't know the definitive answer but if it's any help I could take some basic mesurements of bolt spacings and the like. I have a 18R, a 2.2diesel with five speed box, and a 2.4 diesel (knocking smallend but head good) sitting around. I don't have a 12R but you could compare my dimensions with yours. I have both diesel engines for sale but I'm in N.Ireland so probably too far away for you.! AL
