Hi guys and gals. If you had a lowly old RWD Toyota and wanted to give it some sparkle, what twin-cam carburettored engine with 5 speed box would you put in it which is still reasonably readily available?
Not knowing my Toyotas all that well, I'd be thinking of buying a running rot box and scavenging for parts and dumping the rest. What would be my donor car? 1600cc - 2000cc without scrapping an important model. Does such a thing exist?
Cheers

If you must have all three things ie. carbs, RWD, and twin cam then I think the 2TG and 18RG are the only choices of standard Toyota engine, but these aren't too common. You could put carbs on an AE86 Corolla engine I suppose. ? Al

I agree with the above. Nothing looks nicer than oldskool goodness and the sound of an angry 18RG. This is my setup. These motors are easily available in Australia. This will hopefully make your mind up

Yep! That's just the ticket, isn't it! Do Celica GTs all have 5 speed boxes?

Yes, as far as I know, but I think the 18RG 2000cc only came in the liftbacks like RA28 and RA40. The coupes have 1600cc 2TG and different gearboxes, but both were 5 speeds. That's UK market, can't be sure about Oz, NZ, or specials like race or rally cars. If you looking around for an engine, check out the different crossmembers too; the 2T xmember curves towards the rear for a front sump which is opposite of the 18R.
