Hi Chaps.
I have a small problem with my `72/`73 KE25 Corolla coupe, can anyone advise?
I have misplaced the ignition key and the steering lock is on. The wheels are almost pointing straight ahead and I need to get the car out of the garage to do some repairs to the garage roof. I know I can manoeuvre the cars front end with a trolley jack to get it out but what to do after? The car has all original locks so I would really like to keep it that way. I wondered if the steering column cowling is removed is there a way I can unlock the steering lock or cut it without breaking anything vital. If I have to can I get lock sets easily or can I buy just a new ignition barrel and key it to the original key.
I have also misplaced my Haynes manual so can`t look at the inner workings of the column.
If I can`t find he key then I will have to get new locks, two doors, boot and ignition barrel. Where to find these?
Any suggestions or help much appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Robert,
You should be able to easily remove the 'shear' bolt which holds the barrel & lock assembly to the steering column. I know Toyota did used to have access to key numbers from chassis number so if you find a helpful dealer they may be able to get the key number and cut a key for you which would save having to remove the lock. Equally if you have original documentation it may have been noted in the handbooks or service record for the car.
If you are not familiar with Shear bolts, basically they are tightened up till the hexagon head shears off leaving a round stud which you can tap round with a punch / chisel quite easily, but getting a key to number is by far the best option. Very much doubt a full lock set would be available. Other options would be remove a door lock barrel and take it to a lock / key specialist to get a key made / cut to the profile but likely to be more cost than a dealer key.
Hope this helps, Good Luck Mike
