Do you know anyone who owns an original Ta22Gt/23Gt. as register keeper i compiled a list a few years ago, when there were 35 Ta22gt's and 13Ta23gt's . i know a number have dissappeared however odd ones turn up from time to time. Any registrations, details and photos would be appreciated. ihave two Ta22gt's bronze & white and one red 23gt . the 22gtis coupe is the model to have. let me have your thoughts. malcolm.

My TA22GT already on the Club W/site - Reg No.JKC 873P and chassis TA22 216585. Interesting comments between Malcolm and the Doctor on rarity and desirability between the 22 and 23 in GT form Very much personal opinion - I suggest a draw. The cuter 22 versus the sleeker 23. Did as the TGB brochure would tell us, the 23 with its extended track and wheelbase, handle better. But then Toyota Team Europe rallied its Celicas in 22 form right through to 1978 even after the 23 ceased production. That however, was perhaps the drivers preferred the shorter length of a car already bulky by Rally standards. Rarity? Malcolm's Register has more 22 survivors. but I suspect sales new may have favoured the 23. Neither car sold wll for reasons highlighted in the "Features" article on my car on the Club W/site. Figures of 100 have been suggested for TGB imports of the earlier car but no figures have been given for the 23. However with a wider colour range. better brochure and promotion surely it sold better new than the 22. Take your pick!

TTE continued to rally the TA22 based Celica even after the TA23 had replaced it because the TA22 was already homologated for world rally events and it would have been expensive to go through separate homologation for the new model - especially when visually the two models were so similar. TA22 rally appearances were still good enough promotion for the TA23 in the showrooms.

TTE rallied RA20's for 1976 to 78.
RA20's were homolgated for the 16 valve 2 litre engines based on the 18-RG (Engine Code 152E) for 1976 although they were forced back to 8 valve engines for 77/78 until the RA40 was introduced.
TA22's were only homolgated for the 1.6 litre 2T-G and its derivatives.

Good to read Crownprince and 71ta22 on TTE and the first generation Celicas. D'ont altogether agree with 71ta22. The RA20's they used in 1977 were almost always in 2 Litre 16 valve Group four form, including their two visits to Ireland that year - Andersson, Circuit of Ireland and Mikkola Ulster. I was there! Their own Motor Sport magazine 1977/2 confirms this and also lists Therier using a Group two 8 valve on a French round. Their next magazine 1978/1 gives a run down on the car 1972 to 1978 indicating that the Group four Homologation ran out at the end of 1977 and the car made a few appearances in Group two form in 1978. Curiously Therier is listed as using a Group Five version on two French events. The following 40 Series car was only initially used in Group two form by the team. including a couple of rare appearances in Liftback style on African events, with a Group four version becoming available from late 1979.

Dinger,
Good detail. You able to download copies of the TTE magazines you mention?
Was there any mention of running a TE27 Corolla with the 152E engine in the TTE magazines?

Thanks 71ta22 and Clouder for your interest in my early TTE archives. As you may have gathered I am one of the older ganeration and not very expert on this computer technology. However give me a few days and I will see if my son can assist in getting the info. onto this site. And yes it includes the Corollas used by TTE as back up to the Celicas in those early days. Corolla 25 Coupe rallied as TE27 and the very rare 35 Coupe as a TE37. Both included in a piece on early TTE Corollas I have done for Peter for the next Club Magazine.

A couple of JDM GT dash panels for those interested. JDM TA22 models got AM/FM radios as standard and 4 way hazard light switches. The switch acted as a standard hazard switch but also controlled front and rear parking lights. Parking lights could be switched to only the left side or only the right side or both sides. GTV model dashes were the same but they only got an AM radio as standard. 7012 to 7207 GT Dash 7401 to 7509 GT Dash If anyone wants more detailed photo's of the dash set up just let me know.
