I recently rediscovered some correspondence with Toyota GB dating back to 1995, which detail how many TA22s where officially imported into the UK from 1971 to 1975, and how many GTs where imported from 1974 to 1984.
The 22 figures look like this:-
1971 260
1972 2457
1973 3632
1974 2751
1975 2974
A total of 12074. When you consider that Dagenham produced just under 50000 Capris in 1973 alone, the survival rate for early Celica's starts to look very impressive.
The GT figures look like this:-
1974 23
1975 299
1976 254
1977 93
1978 274
1979 299
1980 262
1981 164
1982 26
1983 1
1984 2
Thats 1697 in total.
It was never made clear which model was which, so 1976 could include 22s and 28s. And 77 & 78 could include 23s, 28s and 40s. (the first of the 40s where flown over and where registered on 'S' plates, the last of the 28s and 23s came by boat, which is why you find some with 'T' plates, registered after the following model - and why there is usually a six month gap between when a Celica was made and when it was registered.)
On a seperate letter, Toyota did put a figure on the total number of 22GTs - 337. After that you have to guess....300 RA28 GTs? 50 TA23GTs? 500 Early 40 GTs? 500 Late 40GTs? Which ever way you look at it - if you want a truly rare car in the UK, buy a Celica GT!
The only provable figure that came out of it was a total of 373 RA23ST - the 18R engined coupes with 3 speed Auto box - that was an entire months production from November 1976. And nobody knows why.....
I hope that settles some arguements - and starts a few more!
