Has anyone done this? The corolla's virtually undrivable at the moment, just had new coil, dizzy, etc and it's still the same. My mechanic recommends replacing the whole lot for electronic. Any recommendations for make/type/whatnot? It's a 1978 corolla TE51 with a 2T engine.

What are the symptoms that you are experiencing? The Toyota ignition system is very reliable when using original points, some aftermarket sets the quality can be a bit marginal. You mention you have changed the dizzy, is this the cap or the full distributer assy? The Carina 2T & 3T as sidta23 mentioned have electronic ignition as does the facelift TE71 corollas, but finding one nowadays wont be easy.
Could be something as simple as a broken advance weight spring, or the small earthing strap on the contact mount plate itself.

Is it the kind of problem where it idles okay but won't pick up under load? Check plugs and leads definitely okay? Run it in the dark. sometimes you can see a spark that shows a cracked plug (the outer ceramic bit) or other short. Vacuum advance hose leaking maybe? Al

Yeah, it idles fine, but pulls poorly under load, juddering, misfiring, banging, etc. It's all very embarassing, haha! I've got new leads and i've gone for a lumenition electronic system. Not cheap at nearly £200, but folks i know that have it in their classics (stag, mk1 escort etc) can't stop saying how much of an improvement it's made to their cars.

Now the ignition has been running a few weeks, is the car back to normal? Any improvement in mpg?

Better than normal cheers Harvey, i'm very impressed. To be honest i haven't noticed a real change in the fuel consumption, it still uses just over a tank a week (about 50 miles a day to work and back). I've just taken it over 140,000 miles, so it's done 70,000 in the five years ive had it....
