After spending all my cash sorting the ignition, another problem.... After a days walking out in the Leicestershire countryside the corolla wouldn't start at all. It was turning over fine, just not sparking. Taking the plugs out revealled that the middle two were swimming in oil, and that the cylinders were full of it. Is this a dead engine? Any idea what's happened? It was driving fine before it was parked...

Not sparking is the reason for the non start as you know, you need to check out all the recent connections on the electronic ignition installation and find out the reason for no spark.
The oil will be caused by the rubber seal rings between the rocker cover and the head itself at the spark plug locations going rock hard with age and not sealing properly. The oil seeps past and lies around the plug, when you remove the plug its covered in oil and the rest runs down the threads into the combustion chamber. Nothing to worry about and an easy fix when you get your spark back. Don't worry when you start up again the blue oil smoke will disappear fairly quickly.
Let us know how you get on.

It seems that some of the electrical connections in the engine bay were corroded, a bit like your MR2 problems. It's always the simple things isn't it, ha! I've not done anything about the rocker gasket yet as i can't find a new one but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems, it flew through it's MOT a couple of weeks ago needing no work at all and is driving great after a service.
