hey all, the TA22 GT Clone is coming along nicely, hope to have it at some shows next year ! but crucial to that is getting the old girl running, she has a 88260 2T-G head on a rebuilt 2T-B block, with the old cam bearings rotated to block up the unused oil-ways, oversize pistons and 88220 front covers - so it's a bit of a mongrel! now, i had the engine assembled by my usual mechanic (who services and looks after all our cars) using an official toyota rebuild manual - the green book we all know and love! since i got the engine back its been mated up to a T50 gearbox and it's sitting snugly in the engine bay of my '22 with a set of immaculate looking (but as yet unproven) solex-mikunis i rebuilt the no.2 chain tensioner so it wouldn't leak oil all over my nice clean engine bay, but the thing decided to self destruct on refitting, shearing in the side of the head and spraying springs, oil and my brand new o-rings everywhere... nice... and considering there was little force being applied i was quite surprised. a new tensioner was sourced and fitted but as it's the aftermarket one and i'm a bit simple, i'm not sure it's 100% right so i need some help with this, secondly, i was advised that the valve train is also not 100% and that the shims may need to be replaced with bigger ones, has anyone got a source for these? or indeed any advise on making sure they're correct? any help with this will be greatly appreciated! thanks

Shims are roughly the same size as those on older peogeot engines. Your local Peugeot dealer should have a variety of sizes available off the shelf.

don't suppose you could be a bit more specific?
cheers tho, so that's peugeot and some bmw that they're similar to!
are these kind of things available from your average motor factor?

Sorry I can't remember which Peugeot they were from. The last time I adjusted the valve clearances on a 2tg, I took the old shims together with new size I required to my local Peugeot dealers and they had them off the shelf.
I take it you know how to check and adjust the valve clearances? If not, I can scan the relevant pages from my Autodata manual and email them to you.
