Hi all, not posted much on here before, as I only registered last year to track down a long lost relative, who was known to be a member on here. But now I'm on the verge of buying my own classic toymota.
Thought I would pick the brains of the experts on here for the things I should be looking out for, what spares are readily available, what isn't etc.
The car in question is an RA28 Generation 1 Toyota Celica Liftback 1977. It has various goodies already fitted such as a roll cage etc, (I only want it as a road legal track car anyway) and it had a full body restoration including new rear panels, but that was almost 10 years ago now!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Sean.

Panels are the main problem, so if it has good ones then you are in luck. Most of them aren't available new anymore. Check usual things like sills, rear side pockets and botom of inner front arches at the bottom of the strut towers. Expect a little movement in the recirc-ball steering. Sometimes niggles like clutch and brake cylinder and so on, but nothing more than your average old car. Mechanically they are generally good and service items are quite easily available. Some items are shared with other old RWD Toyotas like Hiace, Liteace, Cressida, etc. The big thing is if its a GT or an ST. GT = twin cam and LSD as standard.

It has GT on the front grille, the photo of the engine bay appears to have a twin cam lump in it, and the car will come with a rebuilt 1.5 LSD which needs to be fitted. He has stated in the advert that the engine is an 18RG with electronic ignition, up rated coil and 10mm core HT leads, oil cooler fitted and temp and oil pressure gauges. Does all that sound about right?

Some of those things are mods but the GT badge, LSD and twin cam are standard. If you want to make sure it's a genuine one you can check the VIN plate which has engine code 18RG rather than just 18R. The gearbox code for the ST is W50 and (I think) W51 for the GT. Don't know the axle code. The dash insert should be aluminium effect rather than wood effect. The grille should be wire mesh rather than black plastic. To be honest, with all those other mods and the rollcage etc. originality might not be that big an issue anyway. Al
