Iv noticed while driving my ra23 that when i put it in reverse it doesnt seem to fully engage and reverses very slowly. it feels like a slipping clutch. It hasnt been used for several years and i wwas going to change the transmission oil but im not sure what type of oil or how much it holds as i dont have s manual, Has anyone had this prob with auto trannys? thanks davie

Hi Davie Thought you might have had a response on this from those in the Club more technically qualified than me. I have the owners manual for the TA22 and TA40, but not unfortunately the TA23. However my 22 and 40 manuals have quite a bit on the auto. versions including the oil spec. and capacity and checking and filling, which seems quite important as to whether checked in warm or cold condition. Anyhow if you want to give me a tele. call, my number on the back of the Club mag. Dinger (Bell)

I don't know if fluid is the reason for this problem, but if the shifts are harsh while driving along then a fluid change usually fixes it. It might also be the linkage/cable needing adjusted. If it's not either of those then it's maybe something nasty inside (which I know nothing about!) All auto Celicas had the A40 transmission. That's TA23 (some countries), RA23, RA28 etc. The same trans was used behind both 2T and 18R engines but the bellhousing is different. (Same goes for later RA40. Don't know about post 81/82 models. ) To check the level, have the engine running at idle and brake on. Shift through all the gears a few times and then leave it in park. Keep the engine running at idle while you check dipstick. Check using hot or cold levels on dipstick. For hot you need have driven a good 5 miles or more. The fluid should a nice red colour, not black and not smelling "burnt". (Maybe there's other colours but I've only ever seen red. The genuine Toyota stuff was red too.) Haynes manual for A40 states type F fluid, 2.4litres for a drain and refill OR 6.3 litres for a dry refill.
