I have a spare one of these (single OHC) that I started stripping to see if it was worth using in my RA28 Celica. I found the two chain damper plates have snapped off. The top one broke where it is held on with the oil spray thing and the bottom one snapped along its bend. The chains and sprockets seem okay and are not that worn. I don't see any any foreign bodies in there either. Could this be something to do with the tensioners not doing their job properly? I can't find any advice about setting tension or checking spring strength or whatever. Anyone any ideas?

The biggest reason for these guides snapping is chain slap. this is caused by a stretched chain. what you need to do is replace the chains, sprockets, guides and the lower tensioner. You can buy a complete kit that has everything. It may also be helpfull to correctly measure the chain for stretch and wear. Do you have access to a 18r/c/g repar manual as this has the correct specifications. cheers

I couldn't find any detail in my Celica manuals but I found one today for a old Corona that has the 18R and has all the specs in it. You're right. Both chains are way over the tolerance, so that explains it. Thanks.
