My latest project. A 1973 TA22 ST model with 173 thousand Km's on the clock. Virtually all original including the paint. Steel wheels were replaced with alloys. Its a bit rough around the edges but nothing major. Only real issue is the usual cut dash and speakers in the door panels for a stereo radio/tape player. This may not sit well with some purists but I am going to turn the car into a GTV copy. Have started on the exterior trim already. Starting the interior changes. Note the GTV spec Oil Temp guage in the center console.

Mike Car looks great - love the original front guard, coach lines and petrol cap. TA22 always suited white more than other model Celicas. Certainly in the UK many were dealer supplied new with alloys in place of the rather dull standard steel wheels. Lots too had radio/stereos fitted with associated cutting of trim and panels. Even in the early seventies, the standard single band radio in UK models was seen as dated. I know more complex kit shown in the handbook for other markets. Your steering wheel interests me. Any 22 material I have(and my own 22GT) have a T shaped wheel centre. Also T in a 23ST brochure I have with the double horizontal bar on your car, shown as 23GT. My brochures of course UK spec. but surprised if the wheel changed in different markets. Your car and interior looks so original, seems to me a pity not to go the other way and towards original. Each to his own, however. Hope you saw my TTE stuff that Harvey/Tony got onto the site. Good luck with the restoration!

Dinger,
I'm keeping all the ST parts as I go so I can convert back If I want to. I am a firm believer that a totally original car should always be more valuable than even a well modified one. This is still however a bit blurred with TA22's as although now having rarity status they still do not in most peoples eyes (given country of origin) really have classic status.
I have a collection of parts from 73 and 75 year GTV's. The steering wheel is from a 75. When long nose TA22 Celicas were introduced in Japan in January 74 they got same front end and a lot of the trim which was standard on the TA27/RA25 liftbacks. The 4 spoke steering wheel was the standard item on JDM TA22's from 7401 on. Euro market TA22's continued on with the slant nose and much of the previous trim.
Saw the TTE articles. Its all good info. I wonder if anyone else has earlier issues?

Have not done much over the last couple of months. I am using the car as a daily driver. Changed my mind and fitted the 75 GTV dash and console. JDM long nose TA22 GT/GTV instrument. Same as TA27/RA25 GT's. Replaced seized factory electric aerial with aftermarket one. Had to put in a couple of relays to control UP/DOWN function on factory console switch. Factory electric aerial switch replaces one of the blanking plugs on the console beside the handbrake. 75 GTV upper center console with air conditioer louvres and oil temp guage on right. 73 GT unit on left. Thats all for now.

Great looking 22. mate if you want all the factory accesories and it brings it up to GTV spec thats your choice and dont listen to anyone else. Now when you have finished cloning it you can send me all the leftover parts. Just put them in a big box and send them over the Tasman to me in western australia. Cheers Dave

Honestly dont care anything is better than the LT parts. GT would be nice. LT specs, = no nice dash no nice console NO nice bits at all. You see the problem is I have just bought this 1972 LT coupe of an old lady, original owner and only 89000 miles. Exterior is good but needs st or gt flutes Interior is just basic, and in disrepair. Cheers Dave

By The way I was over your part of the world last November, would have liked to catch up and see your car, I did the whole tourist bit with the camper van, both North and South Island including Rotarua. It certainly is Gods country, you just need better wages to live over there. I plan to return in a bout 12 months to see the bits we missed. I did visit the best wreckers I have ever seen in Horopito (spelling) great fo early ford, chev etc parts. I did not see many celicas on the road. Cheers dave

Dave, I saw your "new" LT on Toymods. You would be able to turn it into a really nice car with just a few cosmetic changes, the ST/GT bonnet flutes for instance. A set of alloys and some wider rubber would also make a big difference. Just keep all the original parts. When these cars are finally accepted as true classics, originallity will be valuable. Life in Godzone is pretty sweet. Maybe less money than oz but we dont exactly live life in the fast lane so its all relative. Next time you are over give us a call. I havnt seen another TA22 on the road here for 2 years.

Cars coming along well, when is the underbonnet mods taking place? I assume it will be running a 2T-G when your finished. Looking at your pics makes me want to get work pushed on and get my 61K TA 22GT completed, only had it 13 years and probably lucky if ive driven 50 miles in it!!
If its good weather this weekend will get some pics taken of it.

Harvey,
To tell you the truth my better half has decided to adopt the car as her shopping trolly and child taxi service. She likes the cars colour. My chances of getting it to myself for a weekend to put in a 2TG are slim, for the near future anyway. I do have occasional wicked thoughts about putting a 1UZ in it. Can be picked up here for about $1K.
How can you have a TA22 for 13 years and only drive 50 miles? My 71 was off the road for 3 years while I did the body work and it was torture towards the end. As soon as it was painted it was litterally begging to be driven.
Jeez, at 61K miles your car will only just be run in.

Another update. No significant changes as the car continues life as a daily driver. My spare pair of fender mirrors begged to be put on: Drill holes in the fender 23mm and 6mm diameter and 40mm appart. I drilled these holes 10mm too far forward so the mirror mount is tight under the fender but still just ok: The finished article: Both sides:

I'm working on putting power windows into the car. I have a spare set of rear window mechanisms. Can the regulators be made to fit the doors? Rear power window regulator mechanism: Trial fit on a spare door: Does not work as the crank arm fouls the regulator: However swap drivers side crank arm and turn motor 180 degrees. Chop up manual crank regulator, instal some extra bits of steel, nuts and bolts from another TA22. It works too: Now to source some original switch gear. Could take a while.

The rear windscreen started to leak quite badly. Not usually a good sign. Took the screen out - and part of the roof too. I will need more than a new windscreen rubber to fix that up.
